Removals to Sri Lanka

A well-served sea route with a permission regime that reaches further into a normal household than most. The things that need declaring or licensing here are not exotic — they are the contents of a spare room.

On this route the second rung of the ladder is busier than the first is difficult.

Who moves this way

  • People relocating to Colombo for work, in development, tourism, technology or professional services.
  • Returning Sri Lankan households bringing a UK home back after years abroad.
  • Long-stay residents and retirees, most of them self-funded and with time to plan properly.

How the goods travel

By sea in a container to Colombo, or by air for a small urgent consignment. The crossing is long and routine; the declaration is where the work is.

From Colombo the road network serves the island well, though journey times inland are longer than distances suggest. Hill-country addresses add a genuine climb and narrow approaches at the top.

Where we deliver

Colombo Port on the doorstep. Apartment towers with management offices and booked lifts.
The western coastal strip Negombo to Galle. Good roads and straightforward access.
Kandy and the hill country A long climb, narrow approaches, and a shuttle at the top of many.
Galle and the south Including a fort quarter with vehicle restrictions.
Trincomalee and the east The longest domestic legs on the island.

Customs, and who obtains what

Sri Lanka permits the import of used personal and household effects by a person taking up or resuming residence, against a detailed inventory and residence documentation. The controlled and restricted lists cover categories that are entirely ordinary in a British house, and they are applied rather than gestured at.

The file, split in two

DocumentObtained byWhat it is
Detailed valued inventory Us Item by item with values. Electronics and appliances itemised individually rather than grouped.
Visa or residence documentation You The status under which you are entering or returning.
Passport and arrival evidence You Including the date you entered, which the relief references.
Proof of the Sri Lankan address You Lease or purchase documentation in your name.
Declaration on controlled items You Electronics, radio equipment, drones, media and medicines. Reviewed at survey.
Export and import entries Us Lodged by us or our appointed agent against the inventory.

Rows marked You attach to you as a person, or must be obtained from an authority. We hold no permits and issue none. Rows marked Us are built here from the inventory taken at the survey.

A busier second rung

Most international moves have a handful of declarable items and a great deal of ordinary furniture. This route inverts the ratio slightly: electronics, appliances, radio equipment, drones and printed material all attract more attention here than they do on a European corridor, and a typical household has more of them than anybody realises.

So the inventory itemises electronics and appliances individually rather than grouping them, and the survey goes through the study, the loft and the spare room specifically. It is not that any of it is prohibited — it is that it needs naming, and naming is cheap while finding is not.

The hill country is the physical half of the job. A Kandy or Nuwara Eliya address is a long climb on roads that narrow as they rise, and a great many properties finish on an approach no full-size vehicle enters. A shuttle from the nearest suitable standing point is common and is planned at survey rather than discovered at a bend.

Galle Fort deserves a separate mention: the walled quarter restricts vehicles, and delivery is arranged around that rather than against it.

And the climate. Heat and humidity affect both the crew and the goods, so anything held at either end wants to be held properly, and paper, textiles and timber all behave differently here. Nothing on this page is legal, tax or immigration advice.

Questions on this route

What needs declaring that we would not expect?
Electronics and appliances, radio equipment, drones, printed material and medicines. None is prohibited; all of it needs naming, and a typical house has more of it than people realise.
How should electronics be listed?
Individually, with makes and values, rather than grouped as "electricals". It is the difference between an entry that clears and one that gets opened.
Can a vehicle reach a hill-country address?
Often not to the door. The roads narrow as they climb and a shuttle from the nearest suitable standing point is common — planned at survey rather than discovered at a bend.
What about Galle Fort?
The walled quarter restricts vehicles, so delivery is arranged around that with a shuttle from outside. It is routine rather than exceptional.
Does the climate matter?
For crew safety and for storage. Heat and humidity affect paper, textiles and timber, so goods held at either end want holding properly rather than in a shed.
Are UK appliances usable?
Sri Lanka runs a compatible voltage and largely compatible plugs, which is convenient. Whether large appliances justify container space over that distance is a separate question.
